Of course I must begin with some of the pre-race drama. Yakity and I were scheduled to do the race as a team. As the time grew closer Yakity apparently decided breaking his ankle would be preferable to being my team mate. Hmmm... Yakcident has a nice ring to it, doesn't it??
The yaks actually fielded 3 teams at the Jailbreak.
Captain Yak and, filling in for Yakity Yak was Jim Davis or Aarp-Yak. Since Davis is not a mountain biker, we did the race as a relay.
Kai-Yak and our newest Yak, Nacho Yak (aka Kristi Bailey). These tough
ladies did the race as a team. Nacho is a strong runner and canoeist, but,
the mountain
Carly and Lily, our long-time support team entered as a relay. This was a first for both of the girls and they performed like pros!
The race started with the 3 mile canoe. It was crazy with all the traffic and many got pushed into the bank right off the bat. Of course the Yaks are virtually unstoppable!
The biking section was a great rollercoaster of trails. It started with a BIG drop that 3/4 of the Yaks who took it enjoyed. Nacho forgot the part about staying on the bike and decided to practice her tumbling act. Very Impressive.
Carly really enjoyed the biking and did really well for her first mountain bike race. She was neck and neck with another woman rider and came in just before her at the end!
The running was on some of the biking trail and very scenic.
All in all a great race! Next year we will try to have a complete Yak entry with the entire pack!
